Chapter 24

President Whelan glared at General Brighton. “Well, is he coming back or not?”

Brighton sighed. The muscles in his jaw and neck were tight with tension. “I’m sure he will, Mr. President. I told you. He has some issues that urgently need his attention.”

“Orphaned children.”

Brighton looked at his feet for a moment, then raised his gaze to meet the president’s glare. “Nate’s responsible for the well-being of hundreds of people, men, women, and children. When he’s ready, he’ll be back.”

“You still haven’t told us what ‘people’ you’re talking about.” Wiles leaned back in his chair. “And I’m not sure about your loyalty, either, General.”

Whelan sighed his frustration. “That’s enough, Benjamin.” He frowned at Brighton, then looked at his cabinet. “If you don’t have active TP/SCI clearance, you’re dismissed.”

As men and women started to stand, Whelan waved a hand to stop them. “Just know this. What you’ve heard and seen in this room is classified. If it gets out and is traced back to you, it’s worth your job. You will be fired immediately with prejudice, no recourse, no severance. And a charge of treason to boot.” He met the gaze of each, before jerking his head toward the door.

After most of the cabinet left the room, Wiles waved an index finger toward the president to get his attention. “Sir, I think the Joint Chiefs of Staff should join us for any future meeting with Colonel Rollins.”

“Not this meeting, Benjamin. Maybe next time.” Whelan glanced at Bianchi. The man seemed unsurprised by anything that had occurred. But then he was a werewolf. No doubt he would be unable to discuss this, too. Whelan wiped his eyes and forehead with his right hand. Maybe some coffee and something to eat would help. He sent an order for sandwiches, coffee, and tea to the kitchen, then leaned back. Fingers drumming on the table, he wondered how long it would take for the colonel to return.
